Ladies’ Annual General Meeting 2015

by Hazel Green

Moya St Leger’s described her “Search for Hans Bloch” as guest speaker at this year’s Ladies’ Guild  AGM. St Leger, a local theology student, spoke movingly about her childhood World War II experiences, when her family took in a Jewish refugee couple, Hans and Katie Bloch. Hans was a virtuoso concert pianist, and the St Leger household in Rosslyn Hill, Hampstead was filled with music from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day.

Moya and her brother grew up surrounded by German Jews who, she believes, “contributed more to Britain than any other group of incomers.” Years later she discovered that Bloch had emigrated to Israel, and she is now in touch with two of his children.

The Latest from KSDS’s Ladies Guild

The Ladies Guild would like to invite you to our future functions during the coming months.

We hope you will join us for our AGM at 8pm on Wednesday 29 April when Moya St Leger will be giving us a talk entitled “Searching for Mr Block.” [Editorial interruption: we think Bloch is correctly spelled with an h, not k. Adam, please note.] More information about Moya St Leger is here.

The Kiddush in Shul on Shabbat 6 June will be celebrating all the women in the community. Please come along so that we can thank everyone for whatever role they play in contributing to the life of our community.

ashley-blaker and matt-lucas

Ashley Blaker (right), who wrote for Matt Lucas, will be a Ladies Guild guest speaker.

We are hosting a dinner in the Shul on Sunday 7 June when we will have Ashley Blaker entertaining us with a talk entitled “From Benny Hill to Stamford Hill”. Ashley is a comedy writer for television and has been responsible for much of Matt Lucas’s sit-com programmes and much more.

On Tuesday 23 June the Guild will be having an outing to Strawberry Hill. There will only be places for 25 people so please book early with Jenny Strauss.

On Motzei Shabbat 17 October we are having a supper when our guest speaker will be Brian Sullivan. Brian is the chauffeur to the Mayor of Kingston and quite an authority in his own right about the History of Kingston. His talk will be entitled “Royal Kingston”.

Ladies Guild  Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting will be held at KSDS on Wednesday, 29 April 2015 at 8 pm. Annual reports will be presented.

As there is no contest, the officers and committee will be confirmed for the coming year. There are vacancies on the Committee, and the Guild would be delighted to welcome new members to serve. Your nominations would be most welcome. Please let any existing committee member know if you would like to join and the formalities will be arranged. If you prefer to apply in writing, you can obtain a Nomination Form ( should ultimately reach the right person).

Our Guest Speaker will be Ms Moya St Leger who will give us a talk entitled “Searching for Mr Block”. Hans Bloch was a Jewish refugee and concert pianist housed by her family in their Hampstead home when Moya was a child.  Moya has recently traced his family.

Here is a tantalising sneak preview  of Moya’s subject matter.

Even more tantalising: men are invited to the Ladies Guild events, and we greatly welcome your support!
